Tips to Keep Your Game Strong During Winter

When you live in a climate that sees a lot of cold and snow during the winter, there doesn’t leave much room for baseball. Fortunately, there’s a lot that you can do to keep your game strong, even when you’re not playing the regular season. From recognizing the obstacles to working on your weaknesses, we’ve got a complete list of tips below. 

Know the Obstacles

Winter is cold. There’s snow and ice, holidays and family events, and plenty of fatigue that comes from all the happenings and the weather outside. It can be hard to stay motivated and keep training in the off-season if you’re not aware of what’s holding you back. Pay attention to your biggest hurdles and make sure you hold yourself accountable for overcoming them. 

Exercise Daily

Find ways to exercise however you can. It doesn’t have to be a big event or experience each time, either. A simple jaunt to the end of the street on a warmer day, or a few laps up and down the stairs at school, can make a big difference. 

If the weather is bad, exercise indoors. If you don’t have anywhere to go, check local community centers, sports parks, and fieldhouses. 

Hit the Cages

If you’re lucky, you’ve got access to indoor batting cages near where you live. Do a quick Internet search if you don’t know of any offhand. These can be a great way to keep your swing sharp and even improve your hitting game during the winter months. Plus, it’s a controlled environment so it’s easier to train yourself for all kinds of potential pitches and situations. 

Find a Coach

It doesn’t necessarily have to be your coach, or even a baseball coach, per se. Find a mentor or friend who can support you and help keep you on track. That way, you’re not just answering to yourself. This person should be available to help you with training and staying in shape, as well as providing moral support. 

Set Goals

Finally, have some goals for what you want to achieve during the off-season. Even if it’s just maintenance, that’s a goal of its own. Write these down and make a plan to attain them so that you can feel accomplished before you even set foot on the spring training field.
