Let Your Kids Fall in Love with Baseball

Baseball is America’s sport, but that’s not why kids should play the game. They should play because they really love baseball and all that it offers. If you are just starting to introduce your kids to baseball, or you have a kid who hasn’t quite fallen for the sport just yet, there are some tips below that can help.

Watch the Game Together

One of the first ways that many parents and kids start to bond over sports is by watching the game together. Whether it’s college ball or the MLB, watching some games and hanging out on the weekend is a great time for kids and parents alike. You could also go to a game in your area, such as a minor league game or an MLB game.

Of course, you can also watch baseball movies together that can help to further fuel the love for the game. The Natural, Field of Dreams, and The Sandlot are fun options.

Answer Their Questions and Explain the Game

Kids who are just learning the game are going to have a lot of questions about the rules, the players, the history of the game, and more. You want to be patient and answer those questions when they are asked if you have the answers. If you don’t have the answers, you can look them up together.

Play with Them

To help kids start building their basic skills and improving upon them, you want to play the game with them. Get out and throw the ball. Head to the batting cages. Have a good time and bond over the fun you are having with the game.

Don’t Be a Bad Bleacher Parent

There’s a good chance they will want to join a team at some point. It might be Little League or t-ball now, but their love of the sport could follow them throughout school and beyond.

If you want them to continue loving the sport, though, you don’t want to be a pushy parent or a bad sport. Don’t yell at the umps, even if they get the calls wrong. Don’t argue with other parents. Be a good role model for your children.

Don’t Force the Sport

Finally, you want to make sure that you are letting your kids learn about baseball. They need to be the ones to come around and love the game… you can’t make them love it even if you live and breathe it. Kids will make their own decisions, and a surefire way to make sure they don’t like baseball is to force it on them.
